Nothing came easy last week for the Bottineau-Rugby (B-R) boys’ hockey team in a pair of West Region games. What the Braves did get in the end against Hazen-Beulah (H-B) and Dickinson were a couple of wins.

A four-goal night from B-R senior forward Luke Amsbaugh helped the Braves to a 9-5 win over H-B on Friday in Hazen. B-R then scored nine goals again on Saturday night in an eventual 9-7 road victory over Dickinson.

In Friday’s game against H-B, the Braves jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first period. Braden Pewe opened the scoring 1:52 into the contest before Austyn Lorenz and Amsbaugh also found the back of the North Stars’ net before the period ended.

B-R then scored another three goals in both the second and third periods. Two more Amsbaugh goals in the middle frame sandwiched a tally from David Arstein, and Pewe, Noah Grant and Amsbaugh all scored in the third period to see the North Stars off.

Braves goaltender Ethan Clements stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced against H-B.

B-R needed another big night from Amsbaugh again on Saturday in Dickinson, and that’s what the Braves got. Four more Amsbaugh goals helped B-R to a 9-7 victory over the Midgets.

Grant also picked up a hat trick in the game, while Gabe Leonarde and Lorenz also found the back of the Dickinson net.
Clements was busy once again, this time stopping 36 of the 43 shots he faced.

It wasn’t all good news for the Braves, though. On top of giving up seven goals to the Midgets, B-R was without sophomore defenseman Karsen Ceglowski, who suffered to a serious back injury early in Friday’s second period.

“We were struggling before that and really fell apart after that,” Hoff said of Ceglowski’s departure from the H-B game. “We did make a few plays in the end that got us a win.

“In the end it turned out to be a pretty good weekend for us with two big wins in the West Region.”

B-R (7-6-0) hosted Minot High on Monday after press time. The Braves’ next action will take place on Saturday night on the road against Bismarck Century.
