Westhope-Newburg’s (W-N) girls’ basketball team fell on rough times last week and picked a bad point in which to do it.
A three-game week for the Sioux ended with W-N dropping all three. The Sioux fell 59-58 at Sawyer on Monday before losing 54-47 to Velva on Thursday in Newburg and 58-45 to Stanley on Friday in Westhope.
W-N tied Monday’s game twice late on at 47-47 and 50-50, but Sawyer pulled away just enough. On Thursday against District 11 rival Velva, the Sioux held a 22-17 lead at halftime but capitulated in the second half.
Friday’s game against Stanley in Westhope was more of a struggle for the Sioux throughout the night. The Bluejays built up a 34-24 halftime lead and never looked back.
“We just didn’t show up in the first three quarters,” said W-N head coach Jordan Cooper. “Defensively, we just didn’t have it tonight, and I don’t know what the deal was, but we had talked before the game about finishing plays, and in the fourth quarter we did that, but we have to work on it still.
“It’s slowly coming around, but we need to keep working.”
The lead knocked W-N, which held a 6-3 overall record going into last week, down to 6-6 on the season.
“The record doesn’t mean much right now, even though we’re 6-6. We said at the start of the season that we wanted to get to 15 wins, and we’ve got to take steps along the way.”
W-N hosts district rival Towner-Granville-Upham (T-G-U) tonight at 7:15 p.m. The Sioux will then visit Dunseith on Friday before hosting Des Lacs-Burlington next Monday in Westhope.
