The Westhope-Newburg (W-N) girls’ basketball team opened District 11 play last week by splitting with Drake-Anamoose and Rugby.

W-N opened the week on Tuesday when it defeated Drake-Anamoose 42-26 in Drake.

Molly Lodoen led the way for the Sioux with 14 points, while Amber Hall was another key contributor with 11 points of her own.

In defeating the Raiders, the Sioux further cemented their growing reputation this season as road warriors.

W-N is now 4-1 on the road in its five games thus far this season away from Westhope and Newburg.

The Sioux then hosted Rugby on Saturday in Westhope. W-N’s second game of the week didn’t go nearly as smoothly as the first, as Rugby ran out 52-25 winners in Westhope.

Lodoen and Morgan Kersten were W-N’s leading lights against the Panthers, with both of them finishing the game with eight points.

The loss to Rugby dropped the Sioux to 6-3 on the season and an even 2-2 in W-N’s home outings.

W-N now has another busy week ahead of itself. The Sioux visited Sawyer on Monday after press time ahead of their home game against Velva in Thursday in Newburg at 7:15 p.m.

The Sioux will then host Stanley on Saturday in Westhope starting at 5:45 p.m.
