Lori Erickson’s second grade class spent Tuesday morning at The Golden Rule purchasing hats and mittens that will be utilized in the local Cheerbox program which grants children gifts at Christmas time.
The second graders raised their money to purchase hats and mittens through purchasing candy canes from Erickson.
“During December, I sell candy canes for five cents a piece to my classroom kids. They are allowed to buy up to five each day,” Erickson said. “This year, we raised $37.27. We did have cash donations of $6.02, which means the kids bought 625 candy canes.”
With the money the young scholars raised they went to The Golden Rule before their Christmas break to shop and purchase the hats and mittens, which also grants the kids the opportunity to learn about business, finances and purchases.
The goal is to make sure each student gets the chance to purchase either a hat or pair of mittens. In the past years the program has been conducted, if the students do not reach their goal, Allison McWhinney, sales clerk at The Golden Rule, assists the kids in their goal by personally purchasing the remaining of their hats and mittens.
“Allison donated over $275 to our fund in order for this wish to come true,” Erickson said. “That means 18 items were purchased to be donated to the Cheerboxes.”
Besides McWhinney’s kind gesture, Todd and Julie Mears, owners of The Golden Rule, gave the students a discount on the merchandise to assist the students with their gifts for the Cheerboxes.
Erickson stated that the Cheerbox program is one of many programs her students do in association with the Nine Months of Caring, which is a monthly service program. Erickson added that one of her favorite program in the Nine Months of Caring is the candy cane project.
“I really enjoy the candy cane fundraiser as it is so rewarding to watch the students make their purchases at The Golden Rule,” Erickson said. “They are such caring kids and want to provide for their peers.”
