Stars fall in goal-fest

At certain points, the Bottineau U-19 girls’ hockey team’s home game against West Fargo last Saturday almost felt as much like a basketball game as a hockey one.
After the Stars hung five goals on the Stampede in West Fargo on Dec. 6 in a 5-0 win, it stood to reason that Saturday’s game might also be high-scoring.
That’s exactly what happened. Stars goaltender Alexis Gullett made 37 saves, but Bottineau fell 7-6 in overtime.
Bottineau unquestionably started brightest on Saturday and built up a 3-0 lead in the first period. Erin Severson picked up the Stars’ first two goals in the frame before Shelby Pedie scored one of her own.
West Fargo then stormed back and eventually held a 6-4 lead midway through the second period. The Stars fought back, though, as Megan Olson found the back of West Fargo’s net with 8:35 left in regulation before Severson picked up her third goal of the game with 26.2 seconds left in regulation.
The Stampede finished the Stars (2-2-0) off in overtime, though, with a goal 1:43 into the game’s extra period.
