The Dakota College at Bottineau’s (DCB) women’s basketball team’s lack of depth finally caught up with the Ladyjacks last weekend.
DCB welcomed Northland (Minn.) and the junior varsity team from Concordia (Minn.) to the Woodshed for the Cobblestone Classic. Unfortunately for the Ladyjacks, though, they lost to both opponents and snapped their eight-game winning streak from the start of the season.
The Ladyjacks’ rough weekend began with an 83-79 loss on Friday to Northland. The Pioneers seldom trailed, having taken a 32-22 lead into halftime before holding DCB off in the second half.
Six of the Ladyjacks’ seven players saw action in the game, and sophomore guard Chelsea Frazier led them all with 37 points.
Fifteen of Frazier’s points came from the perimeter, as she went 5-for-8 from three-point land in the game.
The Ladyjacks fell in arguably more disappointing fashion on Saturday when Concordia defeated DCB 67-64. DCB led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but the Cobbers stormed back late while DCB’s offense went cold.
“Forty minutes of basketball is a long time and there’s going to be a lot of momentum swings,” DCB head coach Wayne Johnson said, “and there were plenty tonight.
“We couldn’t hit a shot there at the end when we needed to, but we’ve got a long way to go yet.
“Still, as long as we can keep plugging away and keep the right attitude, we’ll be fine, and we’re still 8-2, and we’ll definitely take that through 10 games.”
DCB will take Thanksgiving Break off before hosting Leech Lake on Dec. 5-6.
