A fire that broke out in a farm house just east of Souris on Monday left the structure a total loss and a couple without a home.
The fire broke out just before 11 a.m. Monday morning and the Souris Fire Department was called to the scene. However, the Souris Fire Department was short men that morning and with the seriousness of the fire the department called the Bottineau Fire Department for assistance.
The Bottineau Fire Department sent three trucks and 10 men to the fire; and, with the Souris’ firemen were able to stop the fire.
The farmhouse was small and the fire took out the middle section of the home on both the first and second story, along with the middle portion of the roof. There was also extensive smoke and water damage throughout the structure.
Doug Burke, and his wife, who are renting the farmstead, were not home at the time of the fire, but the couple lost their pets in the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently undetermined but has been ruled an accident.
