Ladyjacks’ early hot streak continues

Dakota College at Bottineau’s (DCB) women’s basketball team had a very short bench at the start of this season. It became even shorter last Monday when freshman Indeira Foye decided to leave the school.

That left DCB with only six players available for the team’s three games last week. Forward Mattie Schmitt was out with an injury sustained the weekend before at a tournament hosted by Lake Region State.

The resulting lack of depth didn’t end up bothering the Ladyjacks, however, as they won all three games on their docket last week.

It started on Tuesday at the Woodshed when DCB defeated Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) 75-66. In riding a 37-point performance from sophomore guard Chelsea Frazier, the Ladyjacks defeated the Mikinocks for the second time in six days.

DCB defeated TMCC 76-61 on the road in Belcourt on Nov. 11.
“I was very pleased with and proud of our ladies tonight.  We really fought and prevailed without Mattie in the lineup,”

Ladyjacks head coach Wayne Johnson said. “She does so many good things for us but tonight we had the team pick up and persevere.

“I thought we battled hard defensively and did a very good job without fouling. That’s always a key but especially with our short bench.”

Schmitt then returned for DCB’s two games last weekend at the Baymont Inn Classic in Wahpeton. She made an immediate impact on Friday, recording 16 points and nine rebounds in a 72-60 win over Anoka-Ramsey Community College (Minn.).

Frazier led DCB in scoring with 25 points in the victory over the Golden Rams.

On Saturday, the Ladyjacks boosted their overall record to 8-0 thanks to an 81-46 victory over Central Lakes (Minn.). Frazier again led DCB in scoring with 23 points, and she also picked up seven assists and four steals.

Schmitt was a force once again, too, in recording 21 points against the Raiders.

DCB will be at home this weekend in the Cobblestone Classic against both Northland and Concordia (Minn.).
