MINOT - The Newburg-Westhope (N-W) volleyball team faced an uphill battle from the start of its Class B Region 6 quarterfinal on Monday and never reached the top.
The Eagles were heavy underdogs in their first regional tournament match since 2009. Playing in effectively a home match at Minot Auditorium, Our Redeemer’s brushed N-W aside in three sets (25-15, 25-6, 25-11).
“We knew they were going to be scrappy,” N-W head coach Kaitie Fluhrer said of Our Redeemer’s, “They were just that. They capitalized on our low plays and some were at really big points in the game.”
With the win, the Knights moved onto Tuesday’s Region 6 semifinals. It’s there that Our Redeemer’s will meet intracity rival Minot Bishop Ryan, which defeated Bottineau High 3-0 on Monday.
Despite the loss that saw N-W end its season with a 13-21 record, Kaitie Fluhrer came away proud of her team and what it accomplished this year.
“I am very proud of my girls,” Fluhrer said. “They had a great season and making it to regionals is a great accomplishment.
“Obviously we wanted to go further, but that’s just how it goes.”
The Eagles lose five seniors: Halima Khalifa, Maddy Lodoen, Molly Lodoen, Lauren Mach and Paige Stratton.
