PARSHALL - Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn (W-N-G) football coach Tom Nesvold wanted to see his team come out firing in its regular season finale on Saturday at Parshall-White Shield (P-WS).
That’s exactly what happened, as the Sioux burst out to a 40-0 first-quarter lead before eventually defeating the Braves 64-28 in Parshall.
W-N-G scored six touchdowns in Saturday’s first quarter. Sioux running back Chase Conway scored four of them, with three of coming on the ground.
He also caught one touchdown pass from quarterback Reese Schell in that quarter. So, too, did W-N-G wideouts Trent Marquart and Chance Kitzman.
“I wanted us to come out well and be aggressive and play hard, and I thought we did a great job of that,” Nesvold said. “Forty points and a couple of turnovers going our way was big, and I wasn’t quite expecting that.”
With the game seemingly already well in hand, Nesvold opted to put many of the Sioux’s junior varsity players into the game in the second quarter. The backups struggled, though, as the Braves scored two touchdowns in the frame.
W-N-G scored two of its own in that quarter, though, and led 52-14 at halftime. P-WS then secored its final two touchdowns in the third quarter.
The 8-1 Sioux will host Grant County-Flasher in Westhope on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the first round of the state nine-man football playoffs.
