SURREY - Perhaps no other team in North Dakota Class A football relies on its running backs as much as Bottineau High does. As the tailbacks go, so go the Braves.
On Friday night in Surrey, senior BHS running back Ethan Kerslake carried his team to its first win of the season.
During the Braves’ 52-14 win over Surrey, Kerslake broke two school records.
His seven touchdowns against the Mustangs broke a BHS record for points by one player in one game (formerly 24). Just as impressive is that his 282 yards gained on 20 carries on Friday set a new team record for yards by one player in one game (formerly 276).
More importantly from the team perspective is that the Braves’ win on Friday finally got BHS off the snide. Bottineau struggled through its first four games of the season before picking up a first win of the year in the fifth.
“It was great for the team to get a win,” Braves head coach Rob Bedlion said. “We were able to control the (line of scrimmage) on both sides of the ball and that enabled us to have a great night rushing the ball.”
Surrey had no such success with its own ground game. The Mutangs were held to minus-five yards on the ground.
Both of the Mustangs’ touchdowns on Friday night came on passing plays.
Braves junior quarterback Brody Moum had by far his best outing for the BHS varsity team. He finished Friday’s game 5-for-6 through the air for 76 yards and one touchdown, and he carried the ball three times for another 24 yards.
Moum and Braves wide receiver Casey Tooke linked up on BHS’s score through the air.
The win allowed the Braves (1-4) to move off the bottom of the Class A Region 3 standings above last-place Surrey (0-5).
Bottineau will play its homecoming game this Friday against Des Lacs-Burlington (3-1).
