The Dakota College at Bottineau volleyball team fell to 1-6 on Saturday at home against Lake Region State, but the Lady Royals’ had a big fight on their hands before eking out a very close five-set win.

LRSC breezed to victories in Saturday’s first two sets, beating the Ladyjacks 25-15 and 25-14 in those two frames. DCB then fought back by winning the third and fourth sets 26-24 and 25-23, respectively.

Unfortunately for DCB, it fell 15-10 in the first-to-15 fifth set. However, Ladyjacks head coach Allison Scherr came away feeling encouraged by her team’s willingness to keep fighting and get itself back into its match against LRSC.

That willingness to fight, Scherr suggested, could signal a sea change in how the Ladyjacks’ volleyball program operates.

“Bottineau in the past has been an easy win where people come here to play us and think, ‘Oh, it’s Bottineau, it’s no big deal,’” Scherr said. “But I told the girls that if that doesn’t prove something to themselves, that they’re capable of competing, and it definitely did, I don’t know what else would.”

Later on Saturday afternoon, the Ladyjacks won an exhibition match against a DCB alumni team in the third leg of DCB’s triangular invitational tournament. Byoyed by their performance against LRSC, the current DCB team beat the alumni squad in straight sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-13).

The Ladyjacks are at home again on Tuesday against Williston State before hitting the road to face Trinity Bible College on Friday.
